چکیده
Previous research shows that eating together (i.e., commensality) impacts food choice, time spent eating, and enjoyment. Conversely, alone is considered a possible cause of unhappiness. In this paper, we conceptually explore how interactive technology might allow for the creation artificial commensal companions: embodied agents providing company to humans during meals (e.g., person living in isolation due health reasons). We operationalize with design our companion: system based on MyKeepon robot, paired Kinect sensor, able track human commensal's activity picking intake) perform predefined nonverbal behavior response. preliminary study 10 participants, investigate whether autonomous social robot-based can positively establish an interaction perceive it influence their choices. study, participants are asked taste some chocolates without presence companion. The made believe targets experience, whilst robot accidental. Next, analyze choices feedback regarding role task performance. conclude paper by discussing lessons learned about first interactions observed between commensality setting proposing future steps more complex applications novel kind technology.

متن کاملPedagogical Agents as Learning Companions: Building Social Relations with Learners
This study examined the potential of pedagogical agents as learning companions (PALs) to build social relations with learners and, consequently, to motivate learning. The study investigated the impact of PAL affect (positive vs. negative vs. neutral), PAL gender (male vs. female), and learner gender (male vs. female) on learners’ social judgments, motivation, and learning in a controlled experi...
متن کاملA Social-Cognitive Framework for Pedagogical Agents as Learning Companions
Teaching and learning are highly social activities. Seminal psychologists such as Vygotsky, Piaget, and Bandura have theorized that social interaction is a key mechanism in the process of learning and development. In particular, the benefits of peer interaction for learning and motivation in classrooms have been broadly demonstrated through empirical studies. Hence, it would be valuable if comp...
متن کاملMimicry of Food Intake: The Dynamic Interplay between Eating Companions
Numerous studies have shown that people adjust their intake directly to that of their eating companions; they eat more when others eat more, and less when others inhibit intake. A potential explanation for this modeling effect is that both eating companions' food intake becomes synchronized through processes of behavioral mimicry. No study, however, has tested whether behavioral mimicry can par...
